The Nemunas delta is located in western Lithuania and in the Kaliningrad region of Russia, at the entrance of the Nemunas to the Curonian Lagoon. Begins below the Nemunas riverbeds in Tilžė, when the rocks break into Gilija and Rusne.
The Nemunas delta, rising just a few meters above sea level, is the lowest part of the Baltic coast.
Every year during spring floods, 5-20 t / ha of sediment settles in the Nemunas delta, causing the delta to expand westward.
In order to preserve the landscape of the Nemunas Delta region, its natural ecosystem and cultural heritage values Nemunas Delta Regional Park was established in 1992. The territory of the park includes shallow bays of the Curonian Lagoon, the whole system of rivers and streams of the Nemunas delta, old-leaved lakes (grasshoppers), floodplain meadows of the lower Nemunas, the largest polder system in the region, Aukštumala bog and other wetlands, the largest island of Rusnė in Lithuania and the peninsula of Ventės ragas.
The Nemunas delta is one of the few places in Lithuania and in Europe where one can still see large swamps of marshy deciduous forests – habitats of European importance. Many rare species of birds that are protected in Lithuania and in the European Union (Black Stork, Eagle Roach, Crane, Great Owl etc.) breed in the forests and wetland complexes. One of the most important nesting sites of stulgis (globally endangered species) in Lithuania is found in the meadows.
The most impressive structures, reflecting the water connection of the inhabitants of this region, are the lighthouses of Uostadvaris and Vente, the water lift station and polder systems. Unique is the folk architecture ensemble of Skirvytėlė, which also has an ethnographic homestead – a museum. The village of Mingė is called the Venice of Lithuania because its main street is the Minija River. Many old buildings are preserved in the unique town of Rusnė, which is located on the Nemunas Delta Island. There are 7 mounds in the park.
The Ventė Cape Ornithological Station has a museum where you can get acquainted with the nature of the delta and bird ringing. The station introduces the history of bird migration research and ringing, as well as the Museum of Shorebirds. A small exhibit is also installed at the park information center.
