Kaunas St. Archangel Michael (Crew) Church, also known as Kaunas Sobor, is located in the heart of Kaunas, in the eastern part of Laisvės Alley, in the center of a specially formed square.

After the defensive forts of Kaunas Fortress were built in the center of the city around 1888–1891, on the present streets of Gediminas, Kestutis and K. Donelaitis, a whole complex of administrative fortress buildings was erected. The author of the project and the construction works – military engineer, Colonel Konstantin Limarenka.

The Orthodox Sobor was planned to be built as a representative fortress building, expressing luxury and formality. The chosen form of the Basilic temple was supposed to alleviate confessional hostility and to recall the common origins of Christianity. The main volume of the building is solid, close to the cube. It is crowned by 5 domes – a large main and 4 small ones.

Durable materials and state-of-the-art construction technology were used. The bricks were made in the brickwork of the Fortress Engineers Board. The floor is lined with colored metlach tiles, with marble slabs in the Presbyterian section. Brushed granite for plinth and stairs came from Finland. Spiral stairs, roof ridge and small dome fences cast cast iron. The basement is equipped with central heating with four heaters from Warsaw. For the first time in Lithuania, a 16.3 m diameter reinforced concrete dome was installed.

1894-1895 the interior was decorated. The decor of the whole building is exceptionally rich in Greek or alias warrior cross motifs. The architecture is reminiscent of old Orthodox churches. The installed iconostasis had 122 paintings. There were 12 bells hung in the small domes, one of them dated 1618 in Königsberg. The construction of the shrine used 4,300,000 bricks and cost 375,000 rubles at the time.

The building was consecrated by Petropavlovskij Sobor of the Holy Apostles in 1895 and until 1915 belonged to the military authorities of the Russian Empire.

After the occupation of Kaunas by the German Empire in 1915, the Germans removed the bells and tore the zinc tin from the small domes.

he sobor was recognized as a state property in 1919, transferred to Kaunas military crew and titled St. in the name of Archangel Michael. The church was renovated with the help of the Ministry of National Defense.

In 1991, the Kaunas City Council of Deputies returned the Church of Michael the Archangel to the curate of Kaunas Archdiocese. In the same year, the crosses in its domes were again raised, unpaid by the Centrolito factory.

The building is registered in the Register of Real Property of the Republic of Lithuania.
